What's new, and why.

One of the biggest additions to Nairobi Unwind has just landed.

Placelists

Discovering great places is one thing. Sharing them is another.

With Placelists, anyone can now create curated collections of places around Nairobi and share them with friends or the community.

Whether it's:

• Best Coffee Dates ☕
• Breakfast Worth Waking Up For 🥐
• Nairobi After Dark 🌃
• Work-Friendly Cafés 💻
• Golden Hour Spots 🌇
• First Date Approved 💘

...you can now group your favorite spots into a single collection instead of sending people a long list of links.

Every Placelist has its own dedicated page, making it easy to browse, share, and revisit later.

Why We Built It

Over the past few months, we've noticed that people don't just want recommendations. They want recommendations from people whose taste they trust.

Algorithms can tell you what's popular.

Placelists help you discover places through real people and the stories they tell with the places they choose.

It's a much more personal way to explore Nairobi.

What's Next?

We're continuing to polish the experience ahead of the mobile app launch.

You'll see more improvements to meetups, profiles, sharing, and discovery over the coming weeks as we bring the full Nairobi Unwind experience to iOS and Android.

As always, thank you to everyone who's been exploring Nairobi with us.

Two small changes shipped this week, but both touch parts of Nairobi Unwind that people interact with every day.

New OG Images

When you share a spot, meetup, or contributor profile, the preview card now contains actual information about what you're sharing instead of a generic image.

Each preview is generated dynamically and includes the relevant photo, title, and details for that page. Whether you're sending a hidden gem to a friend on WhatsApp, posting a meetup on X, or sharing your contributor profile, the link now tells a much better story before anyone even clicks it.

It sounds like a small thing, but discoverability matters. Nairobi Unwind is built around helping people find places through recommendations from real people, and shared links are a big part of that experience.

New Logo & App Icon

We've also refreshed the Nairobi Unwind logo and icon.

The previous versions got us this far, but they never quite felt like they captured what the project has become. The new designs are cleaner, more recognizable, and work much better across the website, social previews, and the upcoming mobile app.

You'll start seeing them appear throughout the platform immediately.

What's Next?

Most of our focus right now is on the mobile app.

A lot of the work happening behind the scenes over the last few months has been laying the groundwork for that release, and we're getting closer to the point where people can carry Nairobi Unwind in their pocket instead of keeping it open in a browser tab.

More updates soon.

We’ve been busy behind the scenes making Nairobi Unwind smoother, more useful, and a whole lot more fun to explore. Here’s a breakdown of everything we’ve worked on recently — including some new features we’re really excited about.

Revamped Landing Page

We gave the homepage a fresh new look — especially the hero section. It’s cleaner, faster, and makes discovering spots more engaging. You’ll also notice that image loading speed has improved, which should make browsing way smoother.

Introducing Ramani – Our Interactive 3D Map

This one’s big. We’ve launched a new feature called Ramani, an interactive 3D map that lets you explore all listed spots based on their actual location.

Here’s what you can do with it:

• 🗺️ See all active spots on the map in real-time

• 📍 Auto-detect coordinates from Google Maps links (yes, it's automated!)

• 🖼️ View spot name, category, image

• 🌟 Check out the average cost & rating

• 👥 See how many users reviewed a spot

• 🧭 Access it via the new floating compass on the page

• 💡 Use the overlay to toggle filters, themes, and more

• 🌓 Supports dark mode and adapts theme based on time of day

• 📱 Fully mobile-friendly

• 📍 Bonus: There's a geolocation control at the top right — hit that and we’ll help you find places near you

The map theme seems to be a crowd favorite already!

Smarter Color-Coding for Costs

We’ve added a simple, visual way to understand how pricey a spot is — using background colors and colored map markers.

Here’s the breakdown:

• 🟢 Green = Ksh 1,000 or less (Inexpensive)

• 🟡 Yellow = Ksh 1,001 – Ksh 5,000 (Moderate)

• 🟠 Orange = Ksh 5,001 – Ksh 10,000 (Expensive)

• 🔴 Red = Over Ksh 10,000 (Very Expensive)

• ⚪️ Gray = No cost data available

This way, you don’t even need to click a marker to get an idea — you can tell at a glance what’s within your budget.

New: "Solo Date" Filter

Not every outing has to be a group hang. We’ve introduced a Solo Date filter for those moments when you just want to vibe alone. Whether it’s brunch with a book, journaling in a scenic café, or just clearing your head — this one’s for the solitude seekers.

Email Verification – Fixed!

Some users didn’t receive their email verification links — we’ve sorted that out. If you had issues before, you can now verify your account without any drama. Just click the link in your email or request a new one.

A Few More Things

• Minor dashboard styling tweaks for a smoother experience

• Improved popup behavior on map markers (to avoid losing interaction)

• We're currently working towards having 100 active spots by June

• Don’t forget to leave your reviews. You can tell a friend to tell a friend!

That’s all for now. We’ve got more exciting updates on the way — more spots, better filters, and maybe a few surprises too. Stay tuned and keep exploring Nairobi in new ways.

We’ve supercharged the Reviews experience! Now, you can add up to three images, format your text, and include links to your favorite spots—making your reviews more engaging and informative. Plus, verified users will receive notifications for new spot additions!

Added

• Upload Up to 3 Images – Showcase your experience visually.

• Relevant Links – Add links to the spot for easy navigation.

This update makes sharing and discovering experiences more interactive and visually appealing!

We’re thrilled to introduce Community Meetups, a new way to connect with like-minded explorers and experience new spots together! Whether you're looking to find a casual hangout, a themed event, or a new adventure, Meetups make it easy to join and host gatherings.

We’re excited to introduce the Curator Page, a dedicated profile space for curators to showcase their contributions and favorite spots. This update enhances community engagement by allowing users to follow curators, explore their achievements, and discover their latest reviews.

Added

• Curator Profile Page – Each curator now has a dedicated profile showcasing their activity and contributions.

Dark mode is now available! This update brings a visually comfortable experience for users who prefer a darker theme. The mode can be automatically detected based on system settings or manually toggled in the app settings.

Added

• Full dark mode support across the application.
• Automatic theme detection based on system preferences.
• Manual toggle in settings for switching between light and dark mode.
• Improved contrast and readability for dark mode users.
